House Sparrow Bird Facts Passer Domesticus

house sparrow

House Sparrows are not endangered, and their species is listed as ‘Least Concern’ at a global level. However, these birds have a red conservation status in the United Kingdom, where their population declined significantly towards the end of the 20th century. House Sparrows live in gardens, parking lots, streets, around restaurants, farms, and pretty much anywhere they can find grain and food scraps. They often enter buildings like barns and even supermarkets to search for food and nesting opportunities.

Breeding male

In addition to seeds and scraps, American studies have shown that as much as 10% of the house sparrow diet in summer is made up of insects. We agree that the house sparrow is an extraordinarily successful invasive species, and we highlight this aspect of its natural history throughout the manuscript. Importantly, many morphological characteristics also vary geographically. Introduced populations in North America were discovered to have pale coloration in hot, arid climates, but darker coloration in cooler, humid climates (Johnston and Selander, 1964). Outstanding questions about the natural history of house sparrows.

Nest Placement

Examples of sparrows with red heads include the chipping sparrow, cinnamon ibon, chestnut sparrow, tepui brushfinch, russet sparrow, and many others. These common birds like scrubland or tangled chaparral habitat but are also quite common in neighborhoods, city parks, and suburban areas as long as there’s enough shrubby cover. Only males sing, and their songs are a series of several trills lasting for a couple of seconds. Females will leave their nest if there is a predator nearby and act like it has a broken wing while running along the ground to distract it from their nest. Rufous-crowned Sparrows spend much of their time walking or running between shrubs and grasses even though they can fly (although not well).

What Do House Sparrows Eat? (Complete Guide)

They are adaptable and hardy, making them tough as an invasive species – learn more about them below. Humans have introduced this species into several regions outside of their natural range in Eurasia. This species is not known as a particularly musical songbird. Apart from eaves, roof vents, and other suitable cavities, they will also use nest boxes and natural holes in trees and rocky areas. They may build nests in vines and dense tree foliage where suitable cavities are unavailable.

Savannah Sparrows are widespread across California.

This species tends not to move while singing, so you should have time to spot one if you hear them first. Lincoln’s Sparrows are often found in wet meadows in summer, but they like pine-oak forests or tropical forests when they migrate south in winter. White-crowned Sparrows are found in shrubbery habitats with open grassy areas. They also are found sometimes in weedy fields, thickets, and backyards. Similarly, city sanitary practices have improved, which may make finding meals more difficult for sparrows. Livestock is more frequently raised in confined operations, sometimes even indoors.

Slaty brushfinches are mostly gray with rufous-red crowns, white throats, and white wing patches at primary feathers (in some populations). They are omnivores that feed on fruit and insects, usually found in pairs or flocks with other birds. Typically, these sparrows hop around on the ground to eat seeds and insects. But, if you’re lucky, they sometimes visit backyard feeders to munch on black oil sunflower seeds. This species readily visits bird feeders, especially in winter. Feed them sunflower seeds or millet and make sure some of the food ends up on the ground, as they won’t fly up to feeders.

House Sparrows sometimes build nests next to each other, and these neighboring nests can share walls. The best way to find a House Sparrow is to visit an urban area and watch for a conspicuous, tame sparrow hopping on the ground (it might help to bring a sandwich or some birdseed). You can easily attract them with food and they may feed out of your hand. In the countryside, look out for bright, clean versions of the city House Sparrow around barns, stables, and storehouses. Because of its numbers, ubiquity, and association with human settlements, the house sparrow is culturally prominent.

House Sparrow chicks eat regurgitated insects and plant-based foods like grain and animal feed provided by both parents. Adult House Sparrows have a wingspan of seven and a half to ten inches ( cm). House Sparrows are small birds, frequently seen in pairs around farmland, towns, and cities. In the United Kindom and Old World, they are most easily confused with the Eurasian Tree Sparrow (P. montanus). That species also has a limited distribution in the Midwest of the United States. Often described as the most musical of all sparrows, russet sparrows will make “cheep” calls and “chu-swik” songs.

It appears like they would be as soft as a chinchilla to touch. My favorite feature of Song Sparrows is their beautiful songs that can be heard across the continent. The typical one, which you can listen to below, consists of three short notes followed by a pretty trill.

A chunky full-breasted bird with a round head and a stout bill. Breeding males have gray crowns, white cheeks, a black bib, and a chestnut neck. Breeding males have bright chestnut red crowns and napes, black throats, and dark bellies and tails; they become much duller and paler during the winter season. In Europe and Asia, they are known as tree sparrows while in North America where they were introduced are known as Eurasian tree sparrows or German sparrows. These red headed South American sparrows live in montane forests and heavily degraded former forests of Bolivia and Argentina.

First, pre-mate selection, they sing strong and loud trilling notes slowly which then speed up. Second, when the male finds a mate, he sings a much softer, sweeter, slower song from a perch or while flying. Many times, you’ll see them running through the grass to flee a predator.

House Sparrows are small, chunky birds with large heads, short, thick bills, and medium-length tails. Some Palearctic populations are in sharp decline, possibly due to changing land-use patterns. Norwegian Star Cruise Drops Antarctica From Itinerary During Sailing.

When is the best time to visit Antarctica?

Antarctica is best visited in the summer months from November to March when the weather is warmer and the sea ice has melted enough to get closer to the island shore. While plenty of animals live in Antarctica (such as various species of whale, penguin, seal and bird), there are very few humans that call Antarctica home, instead using the region as a base for research. There are no cities in Antarctica but there are several research stations positioned on the continent belonging to various countries like Russia, the United States and Australia. Our experienced expedition team are at the top of their fields.

Antarctic itineraries on Lindblad-National Geographic run between eight and 25 days. The shortest (and most economical) are the Fly the Drake cruises that let you skip sailing across the Drake Passage, thus allowing you to spend the entire cruise actually in the waters of Antarctica. The itineraries are generally 17 nights round-trip from Buenos Aires, simplifying airfare.

Crossing this legendary waterway is a rite of passage, following in the wake of many of history’s greatest explorers. Antarctica doesn’t give up its prized natural treasures easily. Everyone who comes to this isolated continent must ‘earn it’, none more so than those embarking on an expedition cruise from South America’s “Land of Fire”, Tierra del Fuego, bound for Antarctica’s antithetical “Land of Ice”.

Get ready to set sail aboard Norwegian Star and discover the southernmost edge of the South Pole, Antarctica. Embark on an expedition cruise and witness breathtaking icebergs and penguins by the beach from the top deck, all as you take in once-in-a-lifetime moments. Viking Expeditions has entered into the expedition genre with two custom-built vessels, Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis. These new vessels feature many of the amenities favored by Viking fans, such as a light airy Scandinavian design, Nordic spa and king bed staterooms and suites with spacious baths and heated floors.

These 264-passenger sister ships feature many of the amenities of Seabourn’s more traditional ships. Some begin in Buenos Aires; others start in Santiago and include more of South America, such as Patagonia and the Chilean fjords. Good opportunities to explore the Falklands and South Georgia, too. The line also offers coveted sailings that include time inside the Antarctic Circle, not just out on the Peninsula. Roald Amundsen (2019) and Fridtjof Nansen (2020) are the world's first cruise ships to run on hybrid battery technology, making them both more environmentally sensitive as they're designed to cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Let our experts take you deep into the heart of this majestic environment so it can get into yours. And as far as good old-fashioned adventures go, this is the big one. By traveling with us, you'll experience this incredible part of the world in a way that builds human connection and gets closer to nature while respecting the environment.

This question is something we thought long and hard about before deciding to run our own ship in Antarctica. We’re deeply committed to being a responsible business and understanding the impact we have on the places we visit. All Intrepid trips are 100% carbon neutral, but we are driven to do more, from committing to science-based decarbonisation targets to and recently updating our Seven-point Climate Action Plan. If you have an average fitness level (and above) you are compatible with Antarctica travel, so you don't need to spend hours in the gym before considering booking a trip. Antarctica isn't owned by one single country, instead governed internationally through the Antarctic Treaty system signed in 1959 by 12 countries who had sent scientists to Antarctica during and around that time.

Why the Internet is obsessed with 9-month world cruise on Royal Caribbean cruise ship

9 month world cruise

The Ultimate World Cruise, a 274-night voyage aboard the Serenade of the Seas by Royal Caribbean Cruises, departed from Miami on Dec. 10. “I made an Ultimate World Cruise Bingo card for anyone else who is buckling in for this nine months TikTok reality show,” user @whimsysoul shared in a video posted shortly after the ship’s voyage began. Maddox said it makes sense that people are trying to use the language of reality TV to understand what they see on TikTok, where “storytime” posts and drama are often posted episodically. Still, she urged viewers to remember that where reality TV is often scripted and planned behind the scenes, those on the Ultimate World Cruise are real people living their real lives. Beyond that, those documenting their time on the ship have yet to report any reality TV-worthy drama for TikTok to consume. The posts from those on land have mostly consisted of documenting who is aboard the ship, creating “bingo cards” for events on the ship, and cheering on drama.

Has a life event inspired you to travel? How so?

A "deluxe beverage package," wash-and-fold laundry service and Wi-Fi are among the included amenities. The 274-night Ultimate World Cruise is scheduled to visit more than 150 ports of call in 65 countries on all seven continents, according to Royal Caribbean. According to People, another passenger said in a since-deleted Feb. 11 TikTok that the deceased was an "elderly lady" who'd passed away the previous night. Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean.

You need to have balance,” one TikToker said in a video about concerns for the passengers aboard the ship. This 155-night itinerary to more than 40 countries kicks off in Fort Lauderdale and finishes in Barcelona. The itinerary features ports for experiencing some of the great wonders of the world, including the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, as well as Petra in Jordan and the Colosseum in Rome. Travelers can also choose to join segments of the cruise aboard the Azamara Onward for as few as 10 nights. 9 month world cruise

I have met so many people, experienced numerous cultures, and had the most amazing times in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru... Every stop so far has been filled with its own experiences that have made it extremely special. The Caribbean was filled with fun days in the sea, and South America was a region of the world that I had never visited before. Experiencing the beautiful cultures, delicious food, and kind people has been priceless, but today, we aren’t stopping in any ports. "We are thrilled to be hosting a range of guests from young solo travelers, to couples and families," Dave Humpreys, director of sales at Royal Caribbean International AUNZ, told news.com.au. "We have an impressive number of Gen-Z and millennial cruisers, with a significant number of guests between the ages of 18 to 30 joining us on various legs of this cruise."

"I think (TikTok users who watched the post) were tagging Royal Caribbean like 'you need to fix this,'" Brandee Lake explains. "They did at least take the time to come to me and you know, ask how everything's going now." She echoed these statements in separate interview that aired on TODAY Dec. 27, saying that the passengers are "one growing family" and that "everything has been great." Users have expressed interest in following the Lake sisters in particular to see their perspective of traveling the world and taking part in a cruise as Black women.

Linderman said that as December 10 — the start of the world cruise — approached, she started preparing. Linderman said the cruise, which starts at $60,000, was possible after receiving money from her parents' life-insurance plans. "I think that it is surprising out there to people that there's so many on the younger side who are on the cruise," she explained. "I think that's really resonating with people or gathering their attention, maybe."

"I would say the majority, like the overwhelming majority of passengers, are retirees (or seniors)," she explains, summarizing that number as being at least 90% of the passengers. Speaking to TODAY.com, 29-year-old Alé Kenney says that the cruise isn’t just a massive voyage made up of TikTokers and Generation Z. Passengers are currently staying on Serenade of the Seas, a ship that had its maiden voyage in 2003. One would imagine Royal Caribbean isn’t pleased with his presence either — he’s been calling out the company for their low worker pay while also making the experience of actually being on the ship seem … kind of miserable. When I asked if anyone was flirting or hooking up, Little Rat Brain says she attended one of Royal Caribbean’s singles’ mixers but promptly left because no one else showed up. I walked in, looked around, walked out to double-check I was in the right location, and went back up, got a drink, sat there for two minutes, and was like, I’m leaving.

They’re not just people you might run into at dinner once or twice during the week, they’re semi-permanent fixtures of your world for nine months, with whom you’ll have the time to form actual relationships. Several passengers have been documenting their voyages on a day-to-day basis and sharing their videos on TikTok. According to these passengers-turned-social-media-reality stars, here’s what it’s like to live on a cruise for nine months.

With taxes and fees added, this brings the average cost to around $3,173 total for two guests in an interior room. With many itineraries between nights, the price per day makes the segments a great value. The buzz generated by the world cruise at its launch points to a lot of excitement surrounding the cruise, as well as a lot of people naive about how cruise ships operate wrapping their minds around going on a cruise for quite that long. So far we've seen a couple videos with people being unaware of the benefits top tier Royal Caribbean cruisers get on any sailing, but nothing substantial. Because the entire voyage did not sell out, the cruise line opened up smaller segments. This includes seventeen individual itineraries ranging from nine to twenty nine nights.

Highlights include stops in stunning French Polynesia, Indonesia, Thailand, Egypt, Spain, France, and Iceland. See 28 countries on the 138-day Viking World Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to London. After departing from Florida, the Viking Sky will sail the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, stopping in sunny destinations before crossing the Panama Canal to reach the Pacific. From there, the ship will visit destinations in Mexico and the continental United States, continuing on to Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand, and Australia. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and India are among the ports in Asia, then it's on to the Middle East before traveling to Europe, where final destinations include Italy, Spain, and Portugal en route to London.

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? The Lake sisters tell TODAY.com that other than this, they've yet to encounter any reality television-worthy bits of drama to mark on a Bingo card, but they do have a podcast where they plan on sharing their journey with followers. As user @megseestheworld notes, the entire experience reminds her of an episode of "Suite Life on Deck" when the sea days repeat themselves, a similar vibe to the movie "Groundhog Day." Considering all that’s included in your 274-night Ultimate World Cruise fare, you’ll enjoy an incredible value. On Nov. 7, she posted her first cruise-related TikTok sailing around the Northeast, and from there, her videos took off. "This is more of a marathon than a sprint," Linderman said of the nine months she's spending in a cabin.

The world cruise will take 274-nights and visit every continent in the world, including Antarctica. Probably as a group of strangers thrown together in a luxurious or foreign locale, engaging in various activities where romance, conflict, and hysterics could ensue. By that definition, cruises are a reality show without the cameras, which makes Royal Caribbean’s nine-month Ultimate World Cruise the perfect reality show. Some said they cannot fathom what being on the cruise, traveling to that many locations while eating and drinking the days away, would do to a person physically. The first traverses North America and South America over 67 nights and includes stops in Brazil, the Caribbean and Antarctica.

And it seems like everyone on TravelTok has been keeping a close eye on these seafarers, eagerly awaiting updates about the potential drama at sea. It's not too late to join the cast of Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise, turned what The New York Times has deemed "TikTok's favorite new reality show." Started in 2010, Royal Caribbean Blog offers daily coverage of news and information related to the Royal Caribbean cruise line along with other relevant topics of cruising, such as entertainment, news, photo updates and more. The combination of a new kind of cruise of a well-known cruise line and TikTok's tenacity for generating drama seems to have resonated with viewers. World cruises aren't new, but this is the first one that Royal Caribbean has done and being a mainstream cruise line, the attention it's generating may be related to the fact it's more approachable than on smaller lines. Royal Caribbean first announced the Ultimate World Cruise on Serenade of the Seas in late 2021, and it opened for bookings in early 2022.

Her genetic predisposition made her aware that for some people, "someday may never happen, (so) I should do all the things I want to do now," Linderman said. We’ve had such an enriching time so far — and we’re not even halfway through the entire experience. It’s amazing, and I have been able to try and eat a variety of dishes every day. Otherwise, Brandee added, "everything has been great" and the passengers were turning into "one growing family."

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Cruises did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment regarding the rumors, as well as the virality of the cruise itself. Rumors also quickly began to circulate on TikTok, with some people alleging that the ship wasn’t at capacity and how some travelers with better membership status were being treated differently than the others on board. This is your chance to dive deeper into the world’s most remarkable destinations on 16 unique, immersive sailings ranging from 9 to 28 nights. When the nine-month cruise finally started, Linderman got to her room, where she had five large suitcases, a carry-on bag, a backpack, and a weekender bag waiting to be unpacked. She said that after booking her spot on the Ultimate World Cruise, she found a friend who would house-sit for her in Portland, Oregon, while she was away. And with a contracted remote job, she was able to reduce her hours to 10 a week while sailing.

Best New Cruise Ships for Adults

While some of these voyages are a manageable 10 or 15 days, the focus is on the history and exploration of the destination and not as much focus on fun in the sun. Seabourn passengers can pass the time onboard with an espresso or martini at any of the onboard bars or lounges or arrange for an indulgent ensuite bubble bath—rubber ducky not included. If you’d really rather weed out any travel companions not even close to retirement, hop across the pond for a cruise vacation with Saga. This British company serves the needs of the 50-plus community, from insurance to all-inclusive holidays and cruises.

Best for travelers on a budget

Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults. Many of the available on-board activities are also a bit “out of the box” and you won’t find them on any other cruise line. They include things like tent camping on the ship’s rooftop, silent disco parties, and top-deck wine and paint classes in some of Europe’s most picturesque locations. Other cruise lines are adults-only but have more a la carte charges, or are inclusive but don't ban kids (even if you don't often find them).

With nudism, there is less of an emphasis on the sexual aspect of baring it all. Instead, it's more of a means for people to interact on what they feel is a more natural level. The crew on swingers' cruises stays fully clothed and maintains a strict sense of professionalism. Sure, discreet exceptions to the rule may happen, but are strongly discouraged and can lead to crew members being fired.

In summary, the Mediterranean’s charm for adults-only cruises lies in its ability to offer a multifaceted experience that combines history, natural beauty, culinary delights, and luxurious amenities in an environment where peace and serenity prevail. It’s a destination that resonates with those seeking to explore and savor the heart of Europe’s culture and heritage while enjoying the sophisticated tranquility of an adults-only cruise. Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises, now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed onboard. That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships.

Best Cruise Ships for Adults

Princess is an all-ages cruise line; the typical guest is usually between 45 and 70. The line attracts an older demographic with its sophisticated dining options, traditional cruise style, and choice of longer and more exotic global itineraries. Royal Caribbean International has always provided top-notch experiences among cruisers. The company prides itself on pushing the envelope with activities, entertainment, and groundbreaking technology. While Disney Cruise Line caters to families with kids, the options for adults are endless. While there are no other major cruise lines that outright ban the under-18 set, there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

Best for remote yacht-like expeditions

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G. The iconic Viking ships sail all over the world, including the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, the Caribbean and East Asia, and even round-the-world cruises. Eric Goldring is a T+L A-list travel advisor specializing in expedition, small-ship, and medium-ship cruising. These expert-approved cruise lines are perfect for your next adults-only getaway.

All Saga cruise fares are all-inclusive of meals, Wi-Fi, unlimited beverages (including alcohol), gratuities, excursions, spa access, and more. At sea, guests can indulge in afternoon tea service, listen in on lectures from guest speakers, and catch live music and entertainment. Outside of the Mediterranean, Viking Alaska or Caribbean cruises are an easy choice for those seeking adults-only cruising during busy summer travel seasons to regions that are otherwise wildly popular with families. Once you’re back on the ship after a day of exploration, award-winning entertainment options will reinforce the wisdom of leaving the kids at home.

Azamara discourages families with children under 18 as the atmosphere and experiences onboard cater directly to adults. The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025. The Virgin Voyages fleet consists of four ships, each catering to adults 18 years and older. The maiden ship, the Scarlet Lady is a high-end, ultra-modern cruise ship that can accommodate up to 2,770 passengers and has a strong focus on the body and mind. Adults can get pampered at a world-class spa, complete with salt room, hydrotherapy pool, quartz beds, mudroom and the like.

Infants and children are allowed, however, but there are restrictions and very few services. The minimum age on Oceania Cruises is 1 year, while passengers younger than 18 must be accompanied by and stay in the same stateroom as an adult. In addition to the top adult-only cruise lines above, there are several others that also cater mainly to adults. Although they’re technically not 100% adults only, they do make for a great choice if you’re looking for a more sophisticated and grown-up atmosphere. When you book a cruise with the following cruise lines, you won’t find many kids on board (though there might be the occasional family). Instead of offering all kinds of non-stop entertainment and 24-hour buffet restaurants, Viking Ocean Cruises gives its passengers the chance to actually relax in between ports.

This is one of the top luxury cruise lines in the world, offering only all-inclusive cruises to amazing destinations. There are butlers, 24-hour gourmet dining options, first-class wine selections and award-winning shows and performances. While not strictly adults-only in theory, in practice, Silversea cruises are essentially high-end cruises for adults. Both of the Saga ocean ships are considered boutique because they have a maximum passenger capacity of 999, which is far smaller than most ocean liners. On board are fine-dining destinations, spa services and sundecks perfect for lounging with a book. While there are single cabins on Saga ships, there is no one under 50 years of age (it’s a requirement that all guests be 50 or older to cruise).

They strive to offer, as they themselves put it, “The Thinking Person’s Cruise“. Every detail you see on board a Viking ship was thoughtfully designed to allow you to completely immerse yourself in the destinations you’re visiting, as well as their culture, art, history and cuisine. While most cruise lines still focus on offering family-friendly cruises, there are some that have pioneered adult-only cruises. Their ships are either entirely kid-free or at least their (lack of) kid-friendly facilities keep away traveling families. Additionally, Azamara designs its itineraries to maximize time off the ship, so it’s common for sailings to offer late-night stays or even overnights in ports.
